Surveying and valuing 1950s housing (3CPD event)

DATE: Wednesday, 8 November 2017 - 6.30pm, with refreshments from 6.00pm

LOCATION: Little Hay Golf Complex, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 0DT

Residential surveyors are generally well versed in the problems of Victorian construction and all surveyors know everything they think they need to know about ‘modern construction’. Generally ‘modern’ is considered to start around 1960.

The 1950s have always been a Cinderella era for British domestic building. This evening talk by John Fullerlove dealt with some of the issues that a residential surveyor will encounter when inspecting, surveying or valuing properties of the 1950s, often called 'period' properties by estate agents!

John qualified in 1967 as a chartered building surveyor and spent the next 20 years in private practice as a GP surveyor, followed by over 20 years in corporate firms, including over 10 years as surveyor training director. He is now the joint partner in a small private practice and continues to be involved in APC matters and lectures on various surveying issues

LOCATION: Shaw House, Church Road, Newbury  RG14 2DR

Building maintenance activities, including repairs, account for 42% of construction-related deaths and serious injuries according to past HSE statistics. With heritage buildings having a significant amount of roofing and external work, there's greater risk of falls from height and precarious environments.

Rebecca Weir, speaker for this talk, was the author of the Association for Project Safety's practice note 'The CDM-C, Collaborative Thinking and Heritage Sites' published in 2012.  The practice note was written to assist CDM coordinators, construction safety managers, designers and all related disciplines involved in the safe management of construction work on heritage sites or ancient monuments.
