Events During 2019


Construction & Property Lunch Club

DATE: Wednesday 14 August 2019

PPN site visit to Diamond Point, Crawley

DATE:  Thursday 13 June 2019     This visit was eligible for CPD.

LOCATION:  Diamond Point, Fleming Way, Crawley, near London's Gatwick Airport, West Sussex  

Diamond Point is a large double portal framed warehouse on an industrial estate in Crawley just south of Gatwick Airport.  CAE (Canadian Aerospace) have acquired a long lease for the building and agreement with the landlord to convert the building into a flight training centre, with complex ground works to the lower floor to accommodate the height of motion simulators, and with the addition of 4,000 sq m mezzanine and major servicing requirements.  The construction work within an existing building is challenging by itself, but with phased completion and training starting in parallel, the project is a 'shop window' as to what the Construction Industry can achieve.  

A further tour will take place later in the year once construction is nearer completion.


Standing seam roofing with Garland (3CPD talk)

In this talk on standing seam roofing, Daniel Sandell, Regional Technical Manager of The Garland Company (UK), talked about sustainable roofing design, metal (standing seam) roofing systems and RAMP (Garland's Roof Asset Management Programme).


UCEM - The Built Environment of the Future event

'What Next for the Built Environment?' followed by Champagne and canapé reception in the Crystal Exhibition, the world's largest interactive exhibition on the future of cities.

The importance of bees (3CPD talk)

DATE: Wednesday 1 May 2019 at 6.30pm, with refreshments from 6.00pm

LOCATION:  Shaw House, Newbury

For an early May evening, 3CPD selected a topic that may not be mainstream for most surveyors, but which has an impact on the lives of all of us:  "The importance of bees".  Those of you who read the RICS Land Journal may have seen an article on beekeeping in RICS Land Journal, October-November 2018 and earlier articles on the importance to agriculture of pollination by bees.

In this talk, Charles Oliver-Bellasis, past-chairman of the Hampshire Beekeepers' Association, explained the role of bees in agriculture and the process of beekeeping, bringing along a hive and associated equipment to illustrate his talk.

All of us have room to better our skills.  In this talk on improving your surveying of residential property, Keith Thompson FRICS  offered a variety of tips on inspection and reporting techniques which may be applied to all types of residential property.

PPN visit to Poundbury

DATE: Wednesday 10 April 2019

LOCATION:   Poundbury, Dorchester, Dorset

Poundbury is an urban extension to the Dorset county town of Dorchester, built on the principles of architecture and urban planning as advocated by The Prince of Wales in ‘A Vision of Britain’.  Its success has been recognised far beyond Dorset and many of the founding principles of Poundbury have now been incorporated into the British Government’s Planning Guidance Note PPG3.

A presentation was given by the Estates Director, after which he conducted a tour, both for the morning and afternoon groups.  The Duchy also kindly hosted lunch, which gave everyone the opportunity to meet and network.  A full write-up will be in included in our Spring 2019 Newsletter due out at the end of June.  Photos of this event can be found in the Gallery page.


PPN Spring Golf Day

DATE: Thursday 28 March 2019

LOCATIONTandridge Golf Club, Oxted, Surrey  RH8 9NQ

27 PPN members and their guests attended the Spring Golf Day, which started with coffee & bacon rolls on arrival, a morning round of golf, followed by a four course carvery lunch and prize-giving.  A very pleasant warm day showed the course in great condition for this time of the year. Clearly a lot of work has gone into the course by the Ground staff at Tandridge.  We look forward to going back to Tandridge on Thursday 19 March 2020.  Photos of the golf prize-giving can be found in the Gallery page.

Leases and Licences (3CPD event)

David Haines and Richard Hosmer of Charles Russell Speechlys will be explaining the differences between leases and licences, the appropriate use of each form of agreement, supported by a variety of examples.

"Mike Ashley is running House of Fraser's stores under licence from the company's administrator, EY, so he is free to hand back the keys without penalty on any store he does not want."  True or false?  Come along and find out.

As always, there will be the opportunity to pose questions during the presentation and for a general interaction on the latest in commercial property law.

Mock Mediation

DATE: Tuesday 5 March 2019 - 8.15am

LOCATION: Savile Club, London W1

Dave Owen of Pengaron Mediation Services has arranged a mock mediation, with Roger Levitt, a registered CMC Mediator, as the mediator and volunteers from the audience as role-players.  The scenario will be a dispute between neighbours, to include issues of car parking and water ingress.

It's an 8.15am for 8.45am start, finishing at 10.45am.  Two hours of FREE CPD. And you could be back at your desk in High Wycombe or Reading before lunch!

Five Counties Conference 2019 (3CPD event)

DATE & TIME: Wednesday, 27 February 2019

LOCATION:  Wycombe Swan Theatre, High Wycombe

The Five Counties Conference 2019 had the usual mix of commercial and residential surveying topics.  It was a fantastic opportunity to gain six hours of CPD early in the year at a reduced price for PPN members.

The conference included topics on Japanese knotweed, energy optimisation, liability, risk and valuation, PII, planning, service charges, commercial and residential legal matters, and living with uncertainty.

Valuation Workshop (3CPD event)

DATE: Wednesday, 13 February 2019 - 1.30pm to 5.00pm. 

LOCATION: Maidenhead Golf Club, Berkshire

3CPD arranged this half-day workshop for APC candidates and for anyone wanting a refresher in valuation methods. The workshop was free to PPN Members, 3CPD subscribers and ALL APC candidates, £25.00 (incl. VAT) for others.  Up to four hours' CPD.

The tutor was Anthony Banfield, a former tutor at the College of Estate Management and a well-respected trainer in valuation methods and, in particular, the RICS Red Book.

PPN Expert Talk on 'Regent Street Disease' (RSD)

DATE: Wednesday 6 February 2019 6.00pm

LOCATION: Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London WC2

Michael Beare from AKS WardLister Beare Consulting Engineers and John Pagella, Grand Superintendent of Works (Surveyor/Property Adviser) for Freemasons' Hall gave talks on this common defect of corrosion in steel-framed buildings built during the first half of the 20th century, featuring a particular form of construction - tight packing of masonry or stone around the frame and the method of treatment.  This type of corrosion is commonly known as 'Regent Street Disease' after the famous London address where many buildings have shown this form of deterioration.  Freemasons' Hall has also suffered from this problem, as well as many other buildings in London and across the UK.  

Following the talk there was the opportunity for attendees to network over a glass or two of wine/soft drink (included in the price).

PPN Annual Lunch at the House of Lords

DATE: Friday, 25 January 2019 - 12.30pm-2.30pm

location:  Palace of Westminster, London SW1

We were delighted that Baroness Jo Valentine kindly hosted/sponsored the PPN Annual Lunch.  Baroness Valentine talked briefly about her work in Blackpool on behalf of Business in the Community, bringing together businesses to tackle systemic issues in the community and create a positive and resilient community.

90 PPN members, including UCEM student members and UCEM staff, attended the Lunch on a dry, sunny winter's day and enjoyed pre-lunch drinks out on the Terrace, with its views across the Thames. A large number of attendees joined an afternoon tour of the Palace of Westminster by a Blue Badge Guide.  The date of next year's Annual Lunch will be announced shortly.

Planning Law Update (3CPD event)

On Wednesday 5 December 2018, 3CPD held their regular planning law update with Tony Bowhill FRICS FRTPI, a planning consultant with a wealth of knowledge and an eye for highlighting the salient points in planning legislation and case law.

PPN Networking Evening and AGM

PPN held a Networking evening for PPN members, UCEM students and programme leaders/tutors, giving them the opportunity to meet, chat and network over a few drinks in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The AGM was held prior to the Networking event.

Profiled Roofing and Cladding Refurbishment (3CPD talk)

DATE: Wednesday 14 November 2018

Roofing maintenance and refurbishment sits high on the list of a surveyor's priorities because of the cost and disruption when roofing fails.  In this seminar on profiled roofing and cladding, Matt Bishop of Giromax covered:

  • profiled steel - sheet make-up and cut edge corrosion
  • factory coatings
  • asbestos cement
  • roof lights, bolts and fixings, gutters
  • survey safety.
  • Matt has previously delivered this seminar to some firms in the region and comes highly recommended.

    Lime in Construction (3CPD talk)

    Steve Turner of Old House Store talked about the use of lime in construction today and building conservation.  The talk covered the history of lime as a building material, its manufacture and use in both new build and building conservation.  

    Old House Store is a specialist builders merchant that supplies a range of traditional building materials.  It is part of the Owlsworth Group that includes a contracting firm and a manufacturer of lime mortars, plasters and renders.  

    PPN Autumn Golf Day

    PPN Annual Lecture by Professor Tony Travers 

    DATE & TIME:  Wednesday 24 October 2018 at 5.30pm

    This event was eligible for CPD.

    Professor Tony Travers of the London School of Economics gave thought provoking insights into problems which beset not just London but other cities throughout the UK and included the possible effects of Brexit and transport.  The talk was followed by refreshments, giving attendees the opportunity to network and meet other members/students.

    Professor Travers is a British academic and journalist, specialising in issues affecting local and regional government, elections and public service reforms. His knowledge is frequently sought by policy makers and he also provides expert analysis for broadcast and print media, regularly appearing on major television and radio networks.  He has written several books, most recently 'London's Boroughs at 50'.

    Practical steps to GDPR compliance (3CPD talk)

    The EU's new data protection legislation, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), came into force on 25 May 2018.  Despite the legislation having been published two years ago and being only 88 pages long, there has been a shortage of easily-accessible, practical advice for smaller organisations, leaving many wondering what they need to do to stay on the right side of the law.  

    In this evening talk Guy Pullen, wearing his IT consultant's hat, explained the principles behind the GDPR, cut through the jargon, presented the steps required for smaller organisations to become compliant, and bust a few myths.  

    The talk is of value to any surveyor running their own business. 

    Building Surveyors' Oxford Briefing (3CPD event)

    DATE: Friday, 12 October 2018 - 9.00am-5.30pm

    location:  Culham Science Centre, nr Abingdon, Oxford OX14 3DB

    The programme consisted of the usual variety of professional and technical talks, covering traditional and modern building surveying topics, adding up to seven hours of CPD.

    In addition, exhibitors were running a series of parallel talks associated with their products and services.

    Buckinghamshire Business First (BBF) in partnership with Chandler Garvey and Blaser Mills Law held a lease renewal workshop for the commercial property sector, focusing on practical, legal advice.

    It is common for small businesses and entrepreneurs to lease office space, but many owners and decision makers make key mistakes despite this being their second highest expenditure.

    The workshop covered lease renewals, premises as part of the business strategy, what to do if you cannot renew your lease, and acquiring premises in general.

    There was a Q&A session at the end of the workshop.

    Understanding Building Control  (3CPD event)

    "Understanding building control" was a talk by Rebecca Janman, Associate Director at Act Surveyors.  In an earlier 3CPD talk at Shaw House, Newbury, Rebecca has spoken about building regulations when working with heritage property.  

    This talk was of interest to anyone who comes into contact with the building control process.

    Landlord and Tenant Update (3CPD event)

    UCEM Open Evening - London

    DATE: Thursday,  5 July 2018 between 6:00pm for 8:30pm

    LOCATION:  RICS Headquarters, Parliament Square, 12 Great George Street, London SW1

    UCEM (University College of Estate Management) staff were in London at the RICS headquarters at Parliament Square between 6pm and 8.30pm on Thursday, 5 July, 2018, to offer advice about the programmes UCEM offers and its online learning model.

    Whether you are a prospective student or a business interested in sponsoring an apprentice to study with UCEM, the staff were available to meet and discuss how they can advance ambitions within the Built Environment.

    UCEM had Tutors from their Construction and Real Estate Faculties, as well as members of their Admissions and Apprenticeships Teams on hand to answer any queries about studying with UCEM.

    Attendees were shown UCEM’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) – their online portal which hosts their students’ learning materials – and the team were available to advise on how UCEM can advance ambitions in the Built Environment.

    An introduction to GDPR (3CPD event)

    In this evening talk, Guy Pullen, wearing his IT consultant's hat, explained the principles behind the GDPR, cut through the jargon, presented the steps required for smaller organisations to become compliant, and bust a few myths.

    The talk was of particular value to any surveyors running their own business.

    Fire and Tall Buildings - a 3CPD half day workshop

    'Fire and Tall Buildings' was a half day workshop in which Neil Badley, Technical Director at MLM Group, explored the issues relevant to surveyors associated with the Grenfell Tower fire and with other tall buildings.


    How to be a more charismatic speaker - a 3CPD workshop

    This evening workshop explained how you can be more confident, effective and charismatic when speaking in public.  Attendees learnt how to engage the audience so that you and your message are more memorable and persuasive.

    'Investigation and Remedial Action for Tree Root Damage to Property' Talk (3CPD event)

    DATE: Monday, 23 April 2018 at 6.30pm

    LOCATION:  Frilford Heath Golf Club, Abingdon, OX13 5NW

    This was an extended version of the talk "Is that tree too close...?" given by Dr Giles Biddle at the Building Surveyors' Oxford Briefing 2017 conference, with more time exploring avenues of interest and responding to questions. 

    Dr Biddle is the leading expert on tree-related subsidence damage, and the author of the definitive book on the subject, Tree Root Damage to Buildings.

    APC Final Assessment Revision (an APC Conferences Event)

    DATE: Thursday,  19 April 2018 - 9.00am-5.30pm

    LOCATION: BNP Paribas, 5 Aldermanbury Square, London EC2V 7BP.

    This training course provides 8 hours of FORMAL CPD.

    APC Conferences Ltd ran a Final Assessment Revision Day for those taking their final assessment in Session 1 2018.  The day covered valuation, purchase and sale / leasing and leasing, landlord and tenant, RICS rules of conduct, inspection and measurement, and some additional competencies.

    The course tutors were John Faulkner FRICS (who spoke at this year's Five Counties Conference) and Mark Hoffman FRICS.

    We had 24 players - members and guests - enjoy the hottest day of the year so far!  Tandridge golf course is set among mature woodland with spectacular views of the Surrey North Downs and the countryside of Kent and Sussex.  The day included coffee & bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of golf and a four course carvery lunch, followed by prize-giving.  The forthcoming Newsletter will have details of winners and runners-up.  Photos in the gallery to follow shortly.

    PPN Painted Hall Ceiling Tour at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

    DATE: Tuesday, 17 April 2018, starting at 1.00pm  (approx 1 hour duration)

    During a major conservation project, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the drama and secrets of Britain's largest painted ceiling - dubbed 'the Sistine Chapel of the UK'.  The group ascended 60 ft to a special observation deck to discover the transformational effects conservation work can achieve.  The group saw the colour and vibrancy revealed of Thornhill's work, as the smoke and dirt has been removed.

    Green Roofs and Solar Solutions (3CPD talk)


    This talk on green roofs and solar solutions investigated the environmental benefits of different types of green roofs, the design considerations for successful planning and what to expect from the finished project.  By the end of the evening, attendees were able to understand where each type of green roof is most suitable and the fundamental principles that apply to the design of a green roof.

    The speaker, Chris Roddick, Bauder's green roofs product manager, has a wealth of experience and extensive technical knowledge, having worked in green roofing and landscaping for over twenty years.
